A Texas-specific caveat
Texas has no state income tax, and property tax rates are correspondingly high: commonly 2% to 3.3% of assessed value once MUD and district rates are included. Two homes at the same price in different districts can differ by hundreds of dollars a month, so always check the actual rate for the specific address before you settle on a budget.
